We've moved and we have lots of plans for our new home!
This past week was very busy but super exciting! Justin, Ava, and I have moved into our new home! Wednesday after work, we hustled to get all of the big furniture from three different houses packed up in the U-Haul and into the new house.
We were like bandits in the night as we were unloading all of the furniture into the house. Luckily, we had great weather for moving. It was balmy night with no rain, which is unusual for this time of year with Michigan’s the always-changing climate.
To save money, we decided to move ourselves. Luckily, we have some awesome people in our lives that volunteered to help. No begging necessary.
Mike, Justin’s dad, was the furniture placement orchestrator, planning our every move to ensure that we could fit everything in the U-Haul in one trip. It was like Tetris.
Justin and I did most of the heavy-lifting to load up the truck, and our friends Kyle and Olyvia showed up just in time for unloading.
Jill, Justin’s mom, came over during the unloading and made sure that Ava was out of the way.
We were all moved in by 11 pm. Justin and I dropped the U-Haul off, put our bed together and hit the hay. It was a very successful move.
The Adjustment Period
Though I was basically living at Justin’s house before the move, we officially live together now. It is really fun living with my best friend and we are both really happy we made the plunge! Now, we’ve only been here a few days, but I know we are going to do so well as co-habitants.
We have had out bouts about what goes where and such, but with a little communication and understanding, we are making compromises that make us both happy.
It’s awesome to finally be in the house because up until now, we have been drawing up room plans, making lists, some delusions of grandeur, but now it’s real. Tangible.
We have so many ideas to put into action now that we are here and I am so excited. So in hopes that we follow through with our ideas, I am going to give you guys a little insight of our plans!
1. Raised Garden Bed
First order of business, the garden! When we moved into the house, a segregated area for what could be a
garden already existed. It is basically a 10×5 area that is bordered by wood, filled with dirt and weeds.
As is, this “garden” is an eye sore and needs some serious work. Ultimately, I would like to grow veggies and some herbs! To get there, we need to complete the following tasks:
- Make a raised garden bed with 2 sections
- Create a trellis wall to grow tomatoes
- Fill with dirt
- Plant seeds
- And wait!
Since it is already mid-April, we need to get this project going ASAP, so we can plant our seeds on time. My goal is to have this done by May 15. Hopefully we can fit this project into the budget, and more importantly, I can keep these plant babies alive!
Things I want to plant:
- Green Beans
2. The Pantry
Next on the list of projects is our pantry. We have a nice sized pantry, so I want to make the most of it.
Currently, it does not match the gray cabinets in our kitchen, so it will need a paint job. More importantly, it needs to be stocked! Although filling the pantry with all of the clean, nutrient dense, yummy snacks and whole foods will happen over time so right now, I want to make sure that it stays organized.
Pinterest has been my main source of inspiration, as per usual. There are a ton of pantry organization hacks and products that I fully intend to employ. My main priority is to keep food organized with storage bins and jars.
3. The Living Room
The living room as-is is functional and looks put together. Now I just have to put finishing touches on it to make it feel cozy and look great!
Living Room Goals:
- Arm chair
- Throw pillows
- Throw blankets
- Gallery wall (must acquire ART!)
- Mantle decor (seasonal)
Now I know all of these home improvements won’t happen over night, but I fully intend to get this stuff done! We have plenty more on the list, and Justin’s priorities might be different from mine, but it will be a fun experience, working together to make the house our home.
I will do follow-up posts when each project is complete, so stay tuned!
